Home rooftop solar price in Tamil Nadu (2026)

Indicative turnkey prices for on-grid home systems with made-in-India (DCR) modules, including GST and a standard-height structure:

SystemUnits / monthPrice before subsidyPM Surya Ghar subsidyPrice after subsidy
1 kW~120₹65,000–80,000₹30,000₹35,000–50,000
2 kW~240₹1.25–1.5 lakh₹60,000₹65,000–90,000
3 kW~360₹1.8–2.2 lakh₹78,000₹1.02–1.42 lakh
5 kW~600₹2.9–3.5 lakh₹78,000₹2.12–2.72 lakh
10 kW~1,200₹5.5–6.5 lakh₹78,000₹4.72–5.72 lakh

That works out to roughly ₹55,000–80,000 per kW before subsidy. Smaller systems cost more per kW because design, approvals and installation are largely fixed costs. See the PM Surya Ghar subsidy guide for how the subsidy is paid.

Commercial & industrial solar price per kW

For C&I rooftops, price per watt falls as the plant grows. These are the same indicative bands we use across this site, before subsidies and GST:

CapacityIndicative turnkey costIndicative ₹/W
100 kWp₹45–50 lakh~₹45–50/W
250 kWp₹1.05–1.15 crore~₹42–46/W
500 kWp₹2.0–2.2 crore~₹40–44/W
1 MWp₹3.8–4.2 crore~₹38–42/W

For the full breakdown see solar plant cost in Tamil Nadu. Factories that cannot fund CAPEX can use zero-investment RESCO or open access; see CAPEX vs RESCO vs open access.

What moves the price up or down

  • Modules: DCR modules (needed for the home subsidy) cost more than imported ones.
  • Structure: elevated structures, coastal corrosion protection and IS 875 wind design add cost but protect the plant.
  • Inverter: string vs micro-inverter, and hybrid inverters with batteries.
  • Scope: whether net metering, monitoring, insurance and O&M are included.
  • Site: roof height, cable runs and access.

Payback and savings

Home systems in Tamil Nadu typically pay back in about 4–6 years after subsidy for households using 600 or more units per bi-monthly bill. Smaller users, whose first 200 units are already free, take longer. Try your own units in the TNEB bill calculator. C&I plants offsetting ₹7.5–11 per unit grid power commonly pay back in about 3–5 years. Both are indicative; a feasibility study on your actual bills gives the real figure.

FAQ

What is the rooftop solar price per kW in Tamil Nadu?

For homes, about ₹55,000–80,000 per kW before subsidy, with smaller systems costing more per kW. For commercial and industrial rooftops, about ₹38–50 per watt (₹38,000–50,000 per kW) depending on size.

How much does a 5 kW solar system cost in Chennai?

Indicatively ₹2.9–3.5 lakh before subsidy and about ₹2.12–2.72 lakh after the ₹78,000 PM Surya Ghar subsidy.

How much does a 1 MW solar plant cost in Tamil Nadu?

A 1 MWp rooftop plant is indicatively ₹3.8–4.2 crore turnkey, before subsidies and GST. Ground-mount plants vary with land and evacuation costs.

Why do solar quotes vary so much?
